Kyle Shewfelt is a Canadian gymnast who won the first-ever Canadian artistic gymnastics gold medal in the men’s floor exercise competition at the 2004 Athens Olympics. His gold was also Canada’s first at the 2004 Olympics.

Shewfelt performed a vault which was stratified by judges and named after him. He was born on May 6, 1982, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, Shewfelt finished first on Floor and fourth on the Vault. He had been considered a medal threat even before the commencement of the games. He is also a well-skilled hockey player.

At the age of six, Shewfelt began his gymnastics career when his mother, Nola, got tired of him cartwheeling around the house. His mother and his father, Wes, registered him in gymnastics lessons at their local club as a vent for his energy. His passion for gymnastics quickly grew and he soon realized it would be a lifelong career.

Shewfelt went to Calgary’s National Sport School for his high school education, while pursuing his Olympic plans with fellow athletes at the school. From age 6 up until the 2004 Olympics, he trained at Altadore Gymnastic Club under coach Kelly Manjack. coach Manjak got married in 2004 and moved to Ontario after the Olympics leaving Shewfelt in Calgary, training under coach Tony Smith at the University of Calgary.

Due to his young age, Shewfelt was a surprise selection for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. While there, he performed a Yurchenko with two and one-half twists which drew the attention of the judges. After careful evaluation of the new move, the judges ratified and named it the Shewfelt vault.

Shewfelt’s Olympic gold target suffered a major hit in March 2004, when he severely bruised the talus bone in his ankle just months before the games. However, he made a surprise full recovery in time for Athens Olympics.

She featured in the Hungarian film White Palms in 2005 playing Kelly Manjack. He then led the Canadian team to a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2006 where he bagged bronze on Floor and gold on the Vault for himself.

In August 2007, she fractured both of his tibias in an accident landing while training for floor exercise just before the World Championships in Germany. Withdrawing from the event, Kyle hoped to recover and get back into training in an acceptable time to accomplish a bid for the 2008 Summer Olympic team.

After 11 months of acute adjustment and recovery, shewfelt was called to his third Canadian Olympic team. He was called to represent Canada in Beijing after proving that he was in top form at a competitive test epitomizing a week-long training camp in Calgary.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Shewfelt competed in the basic artistic gymnastics round. He was unable to make the top eight in either of his specialties (the absolute for acceptance to the Olympic finals), finishing ninth in the basement and 11th on the floor. Shewfelt accustomed to the accomplished beheading account (B score) for the two vaults he performed (9.75). Upon his exit from the Olympics, he became a guest analyst on aesthetic gymnastics for CBC Television’s Olympic coverage.
