He began his MMA career at the light heavyweight division where he won four times and only managed to lose twice and one no contest. In his next seven fights, he fought at Middleweight and amassed wins over fighters such as Alex Serdyukov, Shonie Carter, and Jeff Joslin. Despite his seven wins, he was not selected for the first season of The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
He got a shot in the UFC where he defeated Brock Larson in a middleweight division on the 3 October 2005, where he defeated Brock Larson by unanimous decision in a middleweight fight.
He later dropped tom welterweight division and began winning fights where he fought Thiago Alves, Josh Burkman, Luigi Fioravanti, Royce Gracie, Diego Sanchez, and Chris Wilson and won all the fights becoming a top welterweight contender. He later faced Georges St-Pierre and lost the match via unanimous decision and lost his 8 streak wins in the UFC. He had a dispute over his unwillingness to sign a lifetime contract with UFC but that was later resolved after an agreement that would allow him to feature in UFC Undisputed video games on November 20, 2008.
On October 13, 2012, he faced Erik Silva where he defeated Erik and was awarded the Fight of the Night honors. On March 7, 2013, he signed a four-fight contract with the World Series of Fighting (WSOF). On June 14, 2013, he made his debut at the WSOF 3 where he lost after being knocked down through a punch that resulted to a chole submission. He later faced Rousimar Palhares, in his title fight for the WSOF Welterweight Championship but he lost by a kneebar at the first round. He later received a nine-month suspension after failing a pre-fight drug test.
On October 17, 2015, he fought against Yushin Okami in the main event where he defeated him by a unanimous decision and managed to grab his first WSOF Welterweight Championship. On April 1, 2016, he defended his title against Joao Xeferino and he won the match. On June 30, 2017, he defended his title for the second time against Brian Foster defeating him through a submission at professional Fighters League 1.
