Through a stint on local radio and regional television, he relocated to London to work as a political correspondent based at the Houses of Parliament.

In 1994, David’s career as a foreign correspondent began when he was appointed as an Asia correspondent for the BBC. While in Singapore, he covered the Hong Kong handover, Mother Teresa’s funeral, and the death of Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, as well as obtaining exclusive photographs of Cambodian dictator Pol Pot’s “trial” by fellow Khmer Rouge cadres for six years. In addition, he covered the devastating earthquake in Kobe, Japan, and reported firsthand on Indonesia’s president Suharto’s downfall – as well as the subsequent bloodbath in East Timor, during which he was briefly imprisoned by Indonesian authorities. While in Asia he was also marked by a series of exclusive reports on the downfall of the so-called “rogue trader” Nick Leeson.

Wills covered stories in the Americas, including North, South, and Central America. After the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on September 11, he went to the length and breadth of the country to gauge public reaction. He covered Argentina’s economic collapse and spent the 2002 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro reporting on the progress of the ultimately victorious Brazilian national team. He uncovered exclusive evidence of child soldiers serving on the front lines of Colombia’s drug war and covered Brazil’s 2002 presidential election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Willis has also covered the Academy Awards for the past eight years.

His reports were also featured prominently on NPR and ABC News, as well as in a BBC book titled The Battle for Iraq.

He has been assigned to a number of difficult and dangerous follow-up missions in Iraq since the invasion. Wills was invited to join the Reuters Fellowship, which provides study scholarships to senior journalists from around the world each year same year. He conducted research on the Bush administration’s relationship with the media during a three-month sabbatical as a visiting scholar at Oxford University.
