Colin Minehart Congress
Colin Minehart, of Albert Lea, recently decided to drop his bid for Congress. He is instead running for the House District 27A seat, which includes Blooming Prairie and Hayfield. Minehart, a small business owner, said he believes he could do a better job helping people at the Minnesota Legislature.
“I knew that my legislative expertise and skills would just be better suited to St. Paul where I can actually help some people,” Minehart said.
He is vying for the chance to take on two-term Republican Rep. Peggy Bennett of Albert Lea. Minehart is one of two Democrats in the race. Thomas Martinez, a sanitation truck driver from Hayward, is also running for the seat. Minehart said he will abide by the party endorsement.
Minehart’s decision to drop out of the 1st Congressional District leaves four Democrats in the race. Candidates include Iraq War veteran Dan Feehan, former state Sen. Vicki Jensen, Mankato attorney Joe Sullivan and Rochester attorney Rich Wright. Two Republicans — Jim Hagedorn of Blue Earth and Sen. Carla Nelson of Rochester — are also running for the seat.
Minehart, 61, owns MineAgain’s Bar & Grill in Alden. He was born and raised in Albert Lea. He has spent the bulk of his career running local businesses. He has also served in leadership positions on the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association, including stints as president and chairman of the board. He ran unsuccessfully for the Minnesota House three times — once in the 1970s and twice in the 1980s.
Minehart said his experience with the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association gives him the background necessary to be successful at the Capitol.
“I’ve got 30 years of experience working in the statehouse as a small business advocate, and I understand how it operates. I still have friends in both houses,” he said.
If elected, Minehart said he would focus on improving access to health care and supporting agriculture. Also high on his priority list would be constituent services.
Minehart added, “What can I do to help the people that I represent? All the people.”
